Disinformation about Vulgarians

1. In an article in the Smithsonian magazine entitled “Who were the notorious Vulgarians there were two major errors:

1. a.The Vulgarians were never founded by Richard Williams or anyone else. This a classic mistake by those people who believe that everything & everyone must be organized into neat little boxes so that they can be brought under some kind of regulation or control. It’s absurd to think that a group of individuals who thought that climbers should be free to climb any routes they pleased should found another organization to promulgate disorganization.
   

2. b. Richard Williams did not write the first definitive guidebook to climbing in the Shawangunks. His first guidebook was published in 1972. The first guidebook to climbing in the Shawangunks was written by Art Gran in 1964.
